The image accompanying this blog sprang to mind when I came across Kate Billing’s words …. ‘don’t let who you’re being get in the way of who you could become’. Kate is a Humanist; Leadership Specialist & NZ B Corp Founder and her words are both powerful and empowering. But I also recognised something else. These 14 words had application to the activity of career exploration and on a more personal note, the career explorer. I was thrilled because when a client defines their own start line, I’ll now have the accompanying banner.
As background, the supporting image was originally attached to a birthday card sent to our son when he was still in single digits, by his aunt, and I still get goosebumps when I look at it. The messaging was certainly lost on him but for me the image was symbolic and represented the unlimited human potential that resided within this amazing little person who will one day go out into the world equipped to journey his own life path.
So, I ask you, is it the wording, the image or perhaps even both that resonate with you? I’m curious because as a Career Exploration Coach I’m acutely aware that questions surrounding ‘being’ and ‘becoming’ can be triggered in anticipation of or in response to a change event irrespective of age or career stage. By the way, my own answer to the above question is both. Time lapse aside, I find the recent arrival of Kate’s words and the treasured birthday card simultaneously complementary but also just as powerful in isolation.
Career uncertainty, or confusion, is not such a great place to hang out, and believe me I’ve been there, but I can assure you it’s a great problem to have and one I celebrate. I’m not being unkind here but the fact that a client has reached out tells me they no longer want a career that just happens to them but rather they want to make their career happen. This is indeed a cause for celebration. Just take a moment to think about role of passenger in a vehicle versus the role of driver. In making this shift from a passive to an active role you may realise that you simply don’t know where to start or what criteria requires your attention. And there is another realisation that dawns at this time and it is this – no one else will care about your career as much as you do so you’ll need to own your own development, both professional and personal.
So, whether you’re starting out, choosing or changing careers or experiencing the Sunday scaries your enquiry will more often than not have the following framework:
These questions, together with the accompanying research and discovery, are sequenced in such a way to build engagement and momentum as you define and develop your vocational identity.
As a Career Exploration Coach, I recognise that we all have our own starting point when it comes to identifying and designing a career that energises us. And as with any journey there is a beginning and our careers are no different. The point I’d like to make here is that we get to decide where the start line is but our careers are, and will continue to be, a work-in-progress. For the career explorer, please know there is no longer a destination to arrive at. Rather, your career experience will be one of evolution which takes place over decades, read 90,000 hours, which gifts you the time to journey from your present self (being) to your future self (becoming). So be patient, enhance your self-knowledge, hone your opportunity awareness, build an effective network and adopt a lifelong learning mindset. You will thank yourself.
I want to thank you for all the work you have done in helping me navigate this transition period. The work we have covered throughout our sessions has been invaluable and I will carry this new knowledge and information with me throughout this journey.
I now truly understand the importance of taking action and not waiting for opportunities to come to me.
At a time when I wasn’t sure about the direction my life would take after finishing University, Bronwyn was there to guide me. I think it’s so important to look to other channels for guidance other than friends or family.
I’m so happy with my detailed profile which also highlighted for me a number of career pathways I had never thought about before! Truly a great investment in my future.
I have learned a lot about myself. I have learned about my values and how these are important in life and in work. I enjoyed identifying what I am good at and what I enjoy doing. I am now thinking about what I want from my future career.
The coaching sessions with Bronwyn have been 10 times more beneficial than I thought they would be.
They worked like clockwork, the sessions are the right length of time and I was able to understand the activities. I really liked my Character Strengths Report.
I really enjoyed working with Bronwyn. She is very welcoming and easy to talk to and her coaching style is very easy to understand.
Overall I thought she really helped me to broaden my horizons, learn more about myself and what I would enjoy doing in the future.
Let’s talk about how career exploration coaching can enhance your self-knowledge, increase your opportunity awareness and inspire purposeful action.
Three key components in the identification of a meaningful and satisfying career pathway.
